Symplectic creates software that helps researchers, librarians, and their institutions collect, manage, analyse and showcase their research.

Who we are

Our main aim is to reduce the administrative burden on researchers, in order to help them get on with doing what they want to do – research. We also provide software and services that help institutions understand their research collaboration networks. Our software is used around the world by over 80 institutions and 300,000 researchers, and we’re still growing – last year we were featured in a short film by the Telegraph’s Business Club.

Created in 2003 by four friends studying for their PhDs, Symplectic has now grown into a successful international business, with over 30 employees spanning 3 continents – but it still retains the cultural feel of a startup.

Symplectic is part of the Digital Science group of companies, all working towards making research smarter, more collaborative, and more efficient. We work in an open plan office in close proximity to the rest of the group, and often work together to integrate our various products.

Meet the team

What it’s like to work here

With an open plan, light office, we work in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. There’s a stand-up meeting each morning, attended by everyone including the CEO and senior management, for us to share what we’re working on and to keep up-to-date with each other.

We work in close collaboration with our clients and partners, in each stage of the development cycle, through implementation, to ongoing support. We host feedback sessions with users of our products, and pride ourselves on being able to deliver creative updates and features that help solve real-world problems. We’re also dedicated to having the best support in the business – human, fast, and effective – and are committed to maintaining our extremely high levels of customer satisfaction.

The Symplectic team comes from a wide range of backgrounds, including scientific research, software development, universities, and the private sector. Some have 20 years experience in the industry, and others are in their first job since graduating. Learning from each other, sharing knowledge, and helping each other is very important to us.

Why join our team?

Based in a thriving, recently regenerated area of London’s King’s Cross (a few minutes walk from the train station), we’re easily accessible from all areas of the city. Nearby, you’ll find lots of pubs, cafés and restaurants, and a quiet canal (great for lunchtime walks and lazing in the sunshine during summer).

The team frequently comes together to socialise. We have board gamers, video gamers, magicians, bakers, footballers, weightlifters, musicians, climbers, volleyballers, writers, and more. We enjoy regular team lunch and dinner outings around the city and if that’s not enough to tempt you, homemade cake is shared at least once a week by our team of highly skilled bakers.

We believe in supporting our team in their personal growth as much as we can. Opportunities for training, development, and conference / event visits are available, and encouraging employees to make use of these is important to us.

Although we are a small company we are able to offer some great benefits including:

  • Personal career development and training support
  • Personal pension plan
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Travel season ticket loan
  • Subsidised gym membership

tom profileI like working here because I get to work with a great team of people dedicated to producing quality software and providing services of the highest standards in a worthwhile endeavour – the support of researchers. There’s an excellent working environment, not just in terms of the physical office space and location, but also the culture, which is supportive and good-humoured, and fosters a positive, can-do approach to the work of the company. In my role I enjoy the variety and challenge of the work, and also the fact that I’m surrounded by very intelligent, motivated people, who enjoy their work but also have a fondness for cake and Croatian spirit.Tom Letcher, VP Business Development
