Who we are

We are a software development and service team specialised in the capture, management and reuse of research information data. Our software is by used by many of the world’s leading research institutions and our team are known internationally for their excellent level of service.

Originally founded by four friends studying for their PhDs, Symplectic is now part of Digital Science which works towards making research smarter, more collaborative, and more efficient.

Our core team are based in London, where we work alongside other Digital Science colleagues including folks from Altmetric, Figshare and Overleaf. We also have team members based in Germany, Romania, Australia and the USA, so we’re also all well versed in online conferencing tools.

How we work

Symplectic prides itself on having a collaborative working environment. In our London office there are regular stand-up meetings, attended by everyone including the CEO and senior management, for us to share what we’re working on and to keep up-to-date with each other. More recently we’ve adopted Slack ‎to help maintain regular contact with members of the team based overseas.

We work in close collaboration with our clients and partners, in each stage of the development cycle, through to implementation and ongoing support. We host feedback sessions with users of our products, and always strive to deliver creative updates and features that help solve real-world problems.

The Symplectic team comes from a wide range of backgrounds, including scientific research, software development, universities, and the private sector. Some have 20 years experience in the industry, and others are in their first job since graduating. Learning from each other, sharing knowledge, and helping each other is very important to us.

Why join us?

Our London office forms part of the WeWork co-working space at Kings Place (above the Guardian’s offices).

Situated on the 7th floor, we have a great view of the Regents Canal and during the summer months we make full use of our private patio (both for Monday lunches and impromptu stand-ups).

Kings Cross and St Pancras Tube stations are in easy walking distance and we also have excellent onsite bike storage, for those with shorter commutes.

The team frequently comes together to socialise. We have board gamers, video gamers, magicians, bakers, footballers, weightlifters, musicians, climbers, writers, and more. We enjoy regular team lunch and dinner outings around the city and if that’s not enough to tempt you, homemade cake is shared at least once a week by our team of highly skilled bakers.

We believe in supporting our team in their personal growth as much as we can. Opportunities for training, development, and conference / event visits are available, and encouraging employees to make use of these is important to us.

We are able to offer some great benefits including:

  • Pension plan
  • Personal career development and training support
  • Eligibility to Life Assurance and Group Income Protection schemes
  • Subsidised gym membership
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Travel season ticket loan
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Flexible working

tom profileI like working here because I get to work with a great team of people dedicated to producing quality software and providing services of the highest standards in a worthwhile endeavour – the support of researchers. There’s an excellent working environment, not just in terms of the physical office space and location, but also the culture, which is supportive and good-humoured, and fosters a positive, can-do approach to the work of the company. In my role I enjoy the variety and challenge of the work, and also the fact that I’m surrounded by very intelligent, motivated people, who enjoy their work but also have a fondness for cake and Croatian spirit.Tom Letcher, VP Business Development
